About the Capuchin Crypt

The Capuchin Crypt is a subterranean cemetery beneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. It holds the remains of up to 4,000 friars collected between 1528 and 1870. The friars used these bones to intricately decorate the chapels, serving as a reminder of human mortality.

Your visit begins in the Capuchin Museum, which explains the history of the Capuchin order. It also features a famous painting by Caravaggio. Afterward, you descend into The Bone Crypts.

Because this is a consecrated religious space, you must follow the strict Dress Code Rules. You also cannot take photographs inside the crypt.

Our Guide, Sylvia, was excellent! She was so knowledgeable and friendly, and made the best out of an unusual transportation hiccup. We especially loved all of the local recommendations she gave us after the tour. Thank you Sylvia for giving us a tour that we will remember forever!

Alain was a very knowledgeable guide and we learned a lot. The tour was long at a little over 4 hrs, but worth it.

Amazing time with Alethea our guide in a small group of 4 guests. Although guides are not allowed in the crypts anymore, Alethea absolutely picked right up after we left with some incredible stories about the history of Rome people aren't as aware of. She gave an excellent, unfiltered series of stories that made visiting these places feel so special.

We loved this tour! Our guide Arielle was very knowledgeable and friendly. The Capuchin Crypts were spectacular, followed by a walk around Rome highlighting some very interesting areas along the way that you would otherwise miss or other tours wouldn't mention. Plus we got a great restaurant recommendation for dinner at the end. Highly recommend!
